Holy Baptism (Christenings)
Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God, which continues for the rest of our lives. Infants and adults may be baptised, but only the once! For all involved, particularly the baptism candidate but also their parents, godparents and sponsors, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ. The wider community of church and friends welcome the new Christian, and promise support and prayer for the future. Hearing and doing these things together is an excellent opportunity to remember our own baptism, and reflect on our own journey of faith.
The church service, commonly called a ‘Christening’, uses many symbols. There is the sign of the cross, which reminds us of Christ’s passion and death. The water of the font, which symbolises rising to new life patterned after Christ’s dying and rising. Water is also a sign of cleansing and commissioning, which reminds us of Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan. And as a sign of that new life, a lighted candle is used to symbolise of the light of Christ conquering the darkness of evil. The grace of baptism never wears off. Baptism conifers the comfort of belonging in God for ever.
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the River Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

God our Creator,
we thank you for the wonder of new life
and for the mystery of human love.
We give thanks for all whose support and skill
surround and sustain the beginning of life.
As Jesus knew love and discipline within a human family,
may all your children grow in strength and wisdom.
As Mary knew the joys and pains of motherhood,
give to all parents your sustaining grace and love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
If you’re already been Baptised, and would like to be Confirmed in your vows; or if you’ve already been Baptised and Confirmed, and would like to attend a further discipleship course, please be in touch.
